Duvel Single Fermented

Belgium·Belgian Strong Golden Ale
Tap to rate

A subtle, fruity bite marks this 6.8 % Duvel, which goes through just one fermentation. After the first fermentation of about 30 days the brewmaster tastes the beer, and at that stage it is called single-fermented. The brewery staff have enjoyed it for decades and cold-filter a small portion for a few select places in Belgium, and more widely in the UK and USA.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with delicate fruity esters—subtle stone fruit and green apple notes emerge alongside a gentle spicy character from the Belgian yeast. Light bready undertones and a whisper of Edelhopfen provide a clean, refined backdrop without assertiveness. The overall impression is restrained and elegant rather than fruit-forward.

◐ Taste

The palate is crisp and smooth-drinking, with the fruity character from fermentation taking the lead—apple and pear notes unfold cleanly across the mid-palate. A subtle spicy bite and dry, bready quality provide structure and prevent sweetness from building. The 25 IBUs are barely felt as bitterness; instead, Edelhopfen contributes a gentle herbal finesse that balances rather than dominates.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and dry with a lingering spicy note and a faint yeasty warmth that carries through. No residual sweetness or harsh bitterness; the aftertaste remains bright and refreshing, inviting another sip.

Warmer than most — 12–14°C. The fruity esters, spice and warming alcohol need room to breathe.

Goblet

The wide mouth and heavy base promote head formation and channel rich aromatics toward the nose. Traditional for Belgian strong ales.
