Zwickl

Tap to rate

Hazy with yeast and cellar-fresh, Zwickl starts mild, shows a yeast bloom and finishes with a short hop bitterness. It is brewed at 11.4° original gravity for 4.9% ABV. Hacklberg has brewed in Passau since at least 1618; its lager cellar, built in 1796, is still part of the brewery's history. In 2012 Hacklberg took over the Innstadt brewery.

Tasting Notes

AI-generated sensory profile for Zwickl

◎ Appearance

Zwickl presents a pale golden hue beneath a substantial, creamy head. The beer's hallmark haziness stems from suspended yeast and the absence of filtration—a defining characteristic of true Kellerbier. Fine carbonation and persistent Schaumhaftung reinforce its cellar-fresh, unrefined character.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with a pronounced yeast bloom—grainy and slightly fruity esters balanced by a whisper of fresh bread. Behind this foundation lies subtle Edelhopfen character: herbal and gently spicy notes that suggest Hallertauer or similar noble varieties. The overall impression is clean and restrained, never aggressive.

◐ Taste

Entry is mild and approachable, with a soft Malz foundation offering bready, lightly sweet flavors. Mid-palate develops subtle malt complexity without fullness, maintaining excellent crispness throughout. The finish arrives quickly with a short, clean hop bitterness (25 IBU) that neither lingers nor overwhelms, characteristic of the style.

◑ Finish

The aftertaste fades briskly, leaving only a light, dry impression and a faint herbal echo. This brevity is intentional—Kellerbier rewards quick, thirst-quenching consumption rather than contemplation.
