Tradition with Ambition

Tap to rate

Dark amber, malty and fruity, full-bodied. This limited edition of 510 bottles, based on a 40-year-old barley wine, was brewed over ten years ago ahead of the 150th anniversary in 2024 and has conditioned in bottle ever since – hence a hint of sediment and haze. AI-generated sensory profile for Tradition with Ambition

◎ Appearance

Deep amber to chestnut brown, with a warm translucence when held to light. Visible sediment and slight haze from extended bottle conditioning impart a rustic character befitting its decade-long maturation. The head forms in modest rings with gentle retention, typical of a well-aged barleywine.

◌ Aroma

Complex and layered, leading with dark dried fruit notes—raisin and plum—underscored by gentle chocolate and caramel warmth from the crystal and chocolate malts. English Goldings and Challenger hops contribute restrained herbal and floral undertones rather than assertive aromatics. A whisper of alcohol heat adds depth without dominating.

◐ Taste

Full-bodied and viscous on entry, with rich malty sweetness anchored by dark fruit character—figs, molasses, and hints of leather. Mid-palate reveals gentle chocolate notes and subtle toffee, balanced by measured bitterness (34 IBU) and a restrained hop spice that frames rather than intrudes. The alcohol sits comfortably integrated, adding roundness and weight.

◑ Finish

Long and warming, with fading chocolate and dried fruit lingering alongside a gentle drying sensation. The aftertaste remains smooth and malty rather than sharp or astringent, a testament to its patient conditioning.
