Sculpin

Tap to rate

Hopped at five separate stages, a method found after years of experimenting, and first brewed in 2005 by merging two homebrew recipes. Sharp citrus, pine and tropical fruit lead, with hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Named after the stinging sculpin fish, this 7% IPA took World Beer Cup gold in 2010 and again in 2014.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with sharp, candied citrus notes—primarily lemon and orange zest—layered with bright pine resin from the Edelhopfen character. Beneath the hop-forward aromatics, subtle tropical fruit esters emerge: hints of mango, peach, and stone fruit create depth. A clean malt backbone supports the composition without dominating, allowing the five-stage hopping schedule to fully express itself.

◐ Taste

Entry is crisp and hoppy, with immediate citrus bite tempered by a restrained, slightly sweet malt base. Mid-palate develops stone fruit character—apricot and peach notes—alongside the persistent pine and bitter herbal notes that define the beer's structure. The 70 IBU bitterness arrives with precision rather than harshness, creating a balanced tension between hop intensity and controlled sweetness that sustains through the development.

◑ Finish

The finish is notably clean and drying, with citrus and pine persisting into a crisp, refreshing aftertaste. Bitterness lingers gently without becoming astringent, leaving the palate primed for the next sip.

Serve at 8–11°C

Serve well-chilled. Session IPAs are at their best cold — the lower ABV means less warmth to balance the hops.

Tulip glass

The curved shape concentrates hop aromas and supports a thick head. Essential for aromatic ales and IPAs where the nose is half the experience.

Drink fresh. Session IPAs are brewed to be consumed young — the hops are at their best now.

About IPA

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a IPA?

IPAs are hop-forward ales with 5.5–7.5% ABV and IBU 40–70+. Bold hop aroma — citrus, tropical, resinous — with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish.

Finding a similar IPA

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same citrusy, fruity, tropical character as Sculpin will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
