Read the labels carefully — this isn't lager vs IPA in the modern sense. Moosehead Lager is a proper 5% Canadian lager. Alexander Keith's 'India Pale Ale' is not a hop-forward IPA at all; it's a 5% mild pale ale that has kept the historical 'IPA' name from its 1820s Nova Scotia origins, when 'IPA' didn't mean what it means today. So this is really a Canadian lager vs a Canadian blonde ale, both Maritime-region flagships, both owned by their respective indie legacies (Moosehead is Canada's oldest independent brewery; Keith's was independent until Labatt bought them in 1971). Moosehead is crisper, drier, more classical lager. Keith's is softer, sweeter, marginally more malt character — but its 'IPA' name will disappoint anyone hoping for actual IPA hop.

Why is Keith's called IPA if it isn't one?
Because Alexander Keith brewed his 'India Pale Ale' in Halifax starting 1820, when the term 'IPA' referred to English pale ales shipped to India (extra hops and higher ABV to survive the long journey). Keith's recipe never had the hop intensity of the historical English IPAs, and modern-era Keith's is even further from that reference — but the brewery kept the 'India Pale Ale' name for the same reason Champagne is called Champagne: a two-century-old brand identity nobody wants to give up.
Is Moosehead really Canadian-independent?
Yes — Moosehead Breweries, founded 1867 in Saint John, is still 100% owned by the Oland family (six generations) and has never been sold to a multinational. That makes it Canada's oldest independent brewery still in independent hands, in a market otherwise consolidated to Molson Coors, AB InBev (Labatt), and craft microbreweries.
