Vagabund Brauerei opened in July 2013 in Berlin's Wedding district, founded by three Americans — Matt Walthall, David Spengler, and Tom Crozier — none of whom were professionally trained brewers. It is widely credited as the first crowdfunded brewery in Germany, raising approximately €22,000 from around 200 backers. RateBeer named Vagabund Best Brewpub in Germany for seven consecutive years from 2014 to 2020. In 2021 the brewery expanded into the historic Osram-Höfe boilerhouse — the former boilerhouse of Germany's first light-bulb factory — a listed building renovated under heritage preservation rules. The financial strain of that project contributed to insolvency in early 2024; Vagabund was subsequently acquired by DF Group.
