Its roots go back to 1994, when Cameron Healy and his son Spoon Khalsa founded Kona Brewing Co. in Kailua-Kona and brewed the first Big Wave, then called Pacific Golden Ale. Since 2020 the Hawaiian brewery has been a separate company, while the beers sold on the US mainland are brewed there under this brand. In 2023 the line was renamed Kona Big Wave, with a new logo and packaging.
