Heineken is the brand brewery of the Dutch Heineken group. Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the Amsterdam brewery De Hooiberg in 1864 and built the company around a bottom-fermented pale lager. The chemist Hartog Elion later isolated the A-yeast that still ferments every Heineken beer. The old brewery on the Stadhouderskade stopped brewing in 1988 and now houses the Heineken Experience. Beer for the Dutch market and for export comes mainly from Zoeterwoude, with further group breweries producing the brand locally in many countries.
