Midnight Sun

Tap to rate

Jet-black porter, sweet and spicy: coffee, biscuit, caramel and toasted malt on the nose, then roast malt, chocolate, honey and an after bite of fresh root ginger. The malt is balanced by a generous helping of hops. Malted barley, oats, roast barley and chocolate malt. Local cattle get the spent grain and, the brewery says, love it. In 2010 it won Gold as bottled porter, mild or stout at the SIBA Scotland awards.

Toasted grain and caramel emerge alongside subtle honey notes, while a fresh ginger spice adds complexity and lift. Noble hops provide a gentle herbal frame without dominating the malt-forward character.

◐ Taste

Entry is smooth and malty, with roasted and toasted grain flavours establishing immediate presence. Mid-palate develops chocolate and caramel sweetness balanced by a warming root ginger bite, while coffee and dark fruit undertones add depth. The Edelhopfen contribute moderate bitterness (22 IBU) that frames rather than overwhelms the sweet malt foundation.

◑ Finish

The finish is clean and moderately dry, with lingering ginger spice and roasted grain notes persisting pleasantly. Bitterness fades gradually, leaving a subtle honey and chocolate echo.

Serve at 10–13°C

Serve at 10–13°C. Too cold mutes the roasted complexity that makes a good porter worth drinking slowly.

Pint glass

The classic — versatile, comfortable to hold and keeps the beer cool. No frills, no distractions: just the beer.

Drink within 6–12 months for best results. Baltic Porters can be aged longer.
