Strahov Dark Lager

Tap to rate

The dark lager is the most award-winning beer of the house. It is all malt, well hopped with Saaz and dry on the palate, drier and more bitter than a classic Munich dark lager, with Munich, caramel and roasted malts behind it. A dark 14° lager was also the first batch the monastery brewery sent out after it reopened, in 2001.

Deep mahogany brown with garnet highlights, displaying the density characteristic of a 14° lager. The head builds firm and tan, settling into persistent lacing around the glass. Clarity is excellent, with no haze or suspended matter—a hallmark of traditional Czech lagering technique.

◌ Aroma

Noble Saaz hops present a restrained, herbaceous top note with subtle floral hints. Beneath lies a warm breadiness from Munich and caramel malts, with gentle roasted grain undertones—toasted rye and dark bread crust rather than burnt character. The overall impression is balanced and inviting, without alcohol heat.

◐ Taste

Entry is clean and malty, with caramel sweetness immediately tempered by a firm, dry bitterness that persists through the mid-palate. Roasted malt flavors—particularly dark bread and subtle cocoa—provide depth and structure. The 40 IBU bitterness is pronounced for the style, lending a drying astringency that distinguishes this beer from softer Munich-style examples.

◑ Finish

The finish is long and dry, with lingering Saaz hop bitterness and roasted grain character. Aftertaste remains clean with no residual sweetness, leaving the palate pleasantly parched and ready for another sip.
