Higsons Best Bitter

Tap to rate

Toffee, caramel, biscuit and chocolate malt carry this deep red-brown bitter, lifted by a fresh, grassy hop note and a bitter tang. Higsons goes back to 1780 and was brewed at several sites across Liverpool before it settled in the Love Lane brewery in the Baltic Triangle. The best bitter runs at 3.8 % ABV on cask, in the 500 ml bottle and in the 5-litre mini keg.

The nose leads with soft toffee and caramel character from the malt backbone, accompanied by subtle biscuit and chocolate notes that sit comfortably in the background. Fresh grassy hop character cuts through the sweetness, bringing a light herbaceous lift that prevents the beer from becoming cloying.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with malt-driven sweetness—toffee, caramel, and a touch of chocolate—that builds a rounded, slightly sticky mouthfeel. A measured bitter tang emerges in the mid-palate from both the hops and malt tannins, creating gentle tension rather than aggressive bite. The balance favors malt throughout, with hop bitterness acting as a counterpoint rather than the lead voice.

◑ Finish

The finish is moderately dry with lingering toffee character and a faint grassy bitterness that fades steadily over a few seconds. A gentle astringency from the malt closes the palate without overstaying.
