BEER COMPARISON
THE HOPIQ TAKE
Two Czech Pilsners, two entirely different philosophies. Urquell invented the style in 1842 and has the slightly rough, expressive character of the original — bitter, complex, soft Bohemian malt. Budvar is more polished: longer lagering (90 days versus Urquell's 30), slightly higher ABV, noticeably softer and rounder. Budvar tastes like Urquell grew up and got patient. Neither is superior — Urquell has more character, Budvar has more refinement. A lot depends on whether you want to be stimulated or soothed.

TASTING NOTES
Pilsner Urquell
The first sip of Urquell reminds you why Pilsner became the world's most copied beer style. Saaz hops on the nose — a very specific spicy, herbal, floral character that nothing else quite replicates. Slightly sweet malt that gives way to a clean, assertive bitterness. The finish lingers with a pleasant hop resiny note. There's a slight roughness to it, an unpolished quality that feels genuine rather than sloppy. The original.
Budvar Original
Ninety days of lagering makes a visible difference: Budvar pours clearer, hangs onto its foam longer, has a cleaner aroma. The Saaz character is there but softer — more noble and restrained than Urquell's assertive punch. The malt is richer for the extended conditioning, a rounder sweetness that integrates beautifully with the gentle bitterness. The finish is exceptionally smooth. Higher ABV but you'd never guess it. Everything in perfect proportion.
