Isn't San Miguel from the Philippines?
Yes — originally. San Miguel started in Manila in 1890, later becoming Asia's largest brewer. The Spanish operation is a separate company that licensed the name in 1953 and now brews entirely in Spain (Málaga, Lleida, Burgos). Spanish San Miguel and Filipino San Miguel are different companies with different owners and recipes — the same brand, two beers.
Is Estrella Damm really from 1876?
Yes — Estrella Damm claims 1876 as the founding of the Damm brewery in Barcelona by Alsatian brewer August Kuentzmann Damm. The current Estrella Damm recipe traces back to the 1930s. Older than most beers people think of as 'European classics' — Bitburger from 1817, Pilsner Urquell from 1842, Heineken from 1873. Estrella sits solidly in that vintage.
