Harpoon Brewery was founded in 1986 by Dan Kenary, Rich Doyle, and George Ligeti — three friends inspired by the rich brewing traditions they encountered while traveling through Europe. The company obtained Massachusetts Brewing Permit #001, the first permit to manufacture and sell alcohol in the Commonwealth in more than 15 years, and brewed its first Harpoon Ale in a converted Boston waterfront warehouse in June 1987. The brewery expanded in 2000 by purchasing the former Catamount Brewery in Windsor, Vermont, giving it a second production facility. In July 2014 Harpoon became an employee-owned company through the creation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, a structure it maintains today.
