Amstel Brouwerij
Amstel Brouwerij was founded in 1870 by Charles Antoine de Pesters, Johannes Hendrikus van Marwijk Kooy, and Willem Eduard Uhlenbroek on the Mauritskade in Amsterdam. The brewery takes its name from the river Amstel. Its first brew was completed in October 1871, and the brewery officially opened in January 1872. Amstel grew rapidly through the early twentieth century, accounting for a third of Dutch beer exports by 1926. In 1968 Heineken N.V. acquired the brewery, and in 1972 brewing at the Amsterdam site was transferred to Heineken's plant in Zoeterwoude.
