Alfa is an independent family brewery in Thull, a hamlet of Schinnen in South Limburg. In 1870 Joseph Meens added a small brewery to his farm, with his own spring and home-grown barley malt; today the Meens family runs it in its fifth generation. Around 1900 the brewery switched to bottom-fermented Bavarian-style beer. Alfa mashes by traditional decoction and brews with certified spring water. The beer has carried the Alfa name since 1953; before that it was sold as Meens Bier.
