Únětický speciál Žitný 11,5°

Tap to rate

Rye malt gives the beer a slightly rough taste and a lightly hoppy finish, under a rich head of foam, and the colour is a little darker than a classic lager. It is made from barley malt and two kinds of rye malt from the Bavarian maltings Weyermann. In recent decades rye was rarely malted for beer, mostly just for seasonal summer beers, the Sommerbier. This semi-dark lager is on offer in August.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with toasted malts and gentle cereal notes from the Weyermann barley and rye blend, complemented by a subtle spicy-grainy character typical of rye malt. Soft, herbal noble-hop notes emerge beneath, with no harsh or vegetal edges. The overall impression is earthy and restrained, allowing the malts and grain complexity to dominate.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with full-bodied malt sweetness and a pronounced roughness from the rye malt, creating a slightly peppery, grainy character that sits between smooth and textured. Mid-palate brings a clean, balanced bitterness from the Edelhopfen that is crisp but never sharp, while the grain-forward profile continues to evolve. The finish demonstrates good drinking smoothness despite the rye's assertive presence, with a drying, lightly hoppy fade.

◑ Finish

The aftertaste is clean and refreshing, with lingering notes of toasted grain and a subtle herbal hop bite. The beer drinks with commendable smoothness given the rye component, leaving a crisp, dry impression on the palate.
