Klosterstoff

Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu

🌍 Germany · Märzen · One of 103 Märzens in hopIQ

The brewery's Märzen, which revives the old custom of a March beer brewed extra strong and is sold year-round in swing-top bottles. The brewery traces it to a 1924 letter in which a Stuttgart innkeeper begged Carl Glauner for more of the 'prima Stoff'. Like the Kloster Helles it has carried the Baden-Württemberg quality seal for regional raw materials since 2020. Sweetish malt and a hint of orchard fruit lead into a sturdy, full body, and a firm bitterness gives the finish its grip.

About Märzen

Style guide · what to expect · how to find alternatives

What is a Märzen?

Märzens are Bavarian lagers with 5.8–6.3% ABV. Rich toasty malt — bread, caramel, biscuit — with clean lager fermentation and low bitterness.

Finding a similar Märzen

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same full-bodied, bitter, malty character as Klosterstoff will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
