Citra

Tap to rate

A powerful grapefruit and lemon taste, a lemony, grapefruity aftertaste and a crisp, dry bitterness, from American Citra and English Pioneer hops over extra pale barley malt and maize. Citra started in 2013 as one of the brewery's monthly specials and proved so popular that it never left. A pale ale with a transatlantic twist at 4% ABV, in cask and polypin all year.

◎ Appearance

Citra presents a bright pale golden hue with excellent clarity and a light, delicate head that settles into fine lacing along the glass. ◌ Aroma

The nose is immediately dominated by bright citrus notes—sharp grapefruit and lemon zest leap from the glass with clarity and intensity. American Citra hops deliver their characteristic yellow fruit character, layered beneath with a subtle herbal greenness from the English Pioneer variety. The extra pale barley malt provides only a whisper of soft grain in the background, allowing the hop aromatics to command attention.

◐ Taste

The palate opens with crisp, zesty citrus flavors—tart grapefruit and lemon dominate the entry, establishing a dry, refreshing character immediately. Mid-palate shows layered hop bitterness (35 IBU) that never overwhelms but instead provides a firm, clean backbone that cuts through the citrus acids. The maize adjunct keeps the beer light and drinkable, while the dry finish prevents any sweetness from lingering. Bitterness is present but integrated, supporting rather than dominating the overall profile.

◑ Finish

The aftertaste mirrors the aroma with persistent lemon and grapefruit notes that fade gradually over several seconds. A crisp, dry sensation lingers on the palate, with the hop bitterness providing the final punctuation—altogether a clean, satisfying conclusion that invites another sip.

Serve at 7–10°C

Cold enough to sharpen the hop aroma without numbing the palate. Around 7–9°C keeps the citrus and pine vivid without losing bitterness definition.

Pint glass

The classic — versatile, comfortable to hold and keeps the beer cool. No frills, no distractions: just the beer.

Drink fresh — hop aroma fades fast. Best within 3 months of canning or bottling.

What is a Pale Ale?

India Pale Ales are hop-forward ales with ABV typically 5.5–7.5% and IBU 40–70+. Bold citrus, pine or tropical aromas alongside firm bitterness and a clean dry finish.

hopIQ matches by flavor profile — not just style label. A beer with the same citrusy, bitter, dry character as Citra will score highly even if brewed in a different country or under a different sub-style name.
