Bosch Porter

Tap to rate

Pitch-black, with mild roast aromas, notes of dark chocolate and a restrained hop bitterness. Despite the name it is a German black lager brewed to the Reinheitsgebot, inspired by English porters. Bosch revived the style in 2001, when porter and Schwarzbier had long been considered forgotten in western Germany. Hallertauer Perle and Tradition, 5.3 % ABV, 13.3 % original gravity.

Carbonation is moderate and even, lending a refined presence without excessive liveliness.

◌ Aroma

The nose opens with restrained roast character—cocoa powder and dark chocolate dominate, supported by a subtle coffee undertone. Noble hops (Hallertauer Perle and Tradition) contribute a gentle herbal backdrop without asserting themselves, allowing the malt to lead. There is no yeast phenolics or esters; the aroma remains clean and balanced.

◐ Taste

Entry is smooth and velvety, with chocolate sweetness immediately apparent. Mid-palate reveals layered roasted malt complexity—cocoa, dark grain, and a whisper of coffee—before a restrained bitterness emerges from the Edelhopfen late in the flavor arc. Bitterness (25 IBU) is polished and refined, never harsh, and integrates seamlessly with the malty foundation.

◑ Finish

The finish is crisp and moderately long, with a dry roasted edge that lingers pleasantly. Aftertaste echoes the chocolate and coffee notes, fading to a clean, hoppy dryness that invites the next sip.
