Bernard Černý ležák

Tap to rate

A pronounced, full taste with a gentle bitterness, brewed from four types of malt. Fine yeast is added at bottling and the beer ferments again in the bottle; the brewery calls it the third member of its family of beers with fine yeast. The beer is unpasteurised, and malt from the Bernard maltings and Saaz hops go into the brew in Humpolec. The beer is kvasnicový (yeast-unfiltered).

AI-generated sensory profile for Bernard Černý ležák

◎ Appearance

Deep mahogany brown with an opaque, hazy appearance characteristic of an unfiltered Czech lager. A dense, tan head forms and clings to the glass with notable adhesion. Fine carbonation creates a soft, persistent mousse that gradually settles into a thin collar around the rim.

◌ Aroma

The nose leads with soft, earthy malt notes derived from the four-malt grain bill, underscored by subtle toasted and bread-like qualities. Noble Saaz hops contribute a gentle herbal and spicy character without assertiveness. A faint yeasty, slightly fruity undertone from the bottle fermentation adds complexity without overwhelming the composition.

◐ Taste

Full-bodied and malt-forward on entry, with a soft sweetness and roasted undertones that evolve through the mid-palate. The Saaz hops provide a measured, clean bitterness that remains gentle and well-integrated rather than sharp. The unfiltered yeast contributes a slight cloudiness and subtle fruity esters that round out the overall impression without harshness.

◑ Finish

The finish is dry and clean, with the bitterness gradually fading to reveal lingering malt character and a faint earthiness. A smooth, warming aftertaste persists without any astringency or cloying sweetness.
